Residential

There is no place like home. Whether you are a homeowner, condo owner or a tenant renting a home, being prepared for the worst is essential for your peace of mind.

Home

Insuring your home and its contents can be daunting, but the team of professionals here at Porter and McMillan are more than happy to help you find the best insurance coverage for your individual needs that accurately represents the value of your possessions.

Home insurance policies cover your home and your personal belongings in the home for direct loss or damage caused by insured perils. Optional coverages such as reduced glass deductibles, increased values on special limit items such as jewellery are also available. We specialize in creating a tailor-made policy that fits your needs.

Mobile Homes

Broad form coverage is available for mobile homes depending on its age. Mobile homes 20 years and older can be insured for named perils and actual cash value on its contents.

All risk insurance is available for newer mobile homes, 20 years and younger, and its contents. Replacement cost insurance is also available on newer homes.

Some mobile homes - often factory built, “double-wide” structures - that are properly installed on foundations and hooked up to water and sewer systems, may qualify for traditional home insurance.

Tenant

As a tenant, you are responsible for insuring your personal belongings against any loss or damage, as well as damage caused by you to any part of the building you are living in, or to others living there. Landlords have comparatively few legal responsibilities to reimburse their tenants, so be prepared. Let Porter and McMillan find the best policy for you.

Condominium

Being a condo owner has its perks, but do not be fooled into thinking all of your insurance needs are covered by your condo association. While the building itself may be covered, your personal property, and the cost of any improvements you make may not be. Although, most condo policies provide insurance for contents and improvements, be sure to check with a Porter and McMillan representative.

Supplemental insurance is also available for you to insure the condo unit itself so that you are protected in case the condo association’s insurance does not fully cover a loss to your unit.

Seasonal

If you own a cabin or other home-away-from-home dwelling you can have it insured on the same policy as your home, or it can be insured separately. Do not forget to include any outbuildings and fences when determining the coverage you need.

Seasonal coverage is usually more limited. For example, burglary can be covered, but not theft. Take time to understand your policy’s limits before you agree to coverage. Give us a call or visit your nearest Porter and McMillan office to get the answers you’re looking for.

Rental

Insuring your rental property is much the same as insuring the home you live in. Make sure it is protected in case of fire or water damage.

Make sure your tenant knows what he or she is liable for in case of an accident. Tenant insurance is available to cover their personal property. See Tenant coverage for further information.

New Construction (COC)

While building your new home make sure you are completely covered for those “what if” situations. Course of Construction insurance covers liability for any non-workers on the work site, and any materials on the job site including windows, doors etc. The insurance covers the full value of the house and is for brand new homes only.
