What is an Insurance Broker?

Insurance brokers work with their clients to identify their needs and potential risks and then to find suitable coverage to ensure that said risk is managed and that the client's assets are protected. A post-secondary degree is not required to enter into the insurance industry, and there is a large opportunity for growth. Insurance brokers are generally divided into two categories: Personal Lines and Commercial Lines. Personal Lines brokers deal with areas such as automobile, property, and marine insurance; while Commercial Lines handles insurance for businesses.

How Do I Become an Insurance Broker?

There are licensing requirements for each area of insurance that brokers may handle. The first step to becoming licensed involves challenging the Fundamentals of Insurance exam. Once a passing mark is achieved, you can then apply to the Insurance Council of BC for your Level 1 insurance licence. For more information about the licensing process, please call one of our three offices, or visit the Insurance Brokers Association of BC.
